California Coastal Natural Monument, San Diego parks celebration and Ken Burn’s new series

BLM's California Coastal National Monument was an exhibitor at an all-day "Celebration of San Diego Parks, Natural Areas and Open Space." The celebration was held Tuesday, August 25, 2009, on the anniversary of the National Park Service's Founder's Day. (text continues below)

The event at Cabrillo National Monument, on the end of Point Loma in San Diego, also served as a kick-off for the new Ken Burns film series, The National Parks: America's Best Idea.  This six-part 12-hour documentary directed by Burns and written and co-produced by Dayton Duncan will premiere on PBS stations nationwide on Sunday, September 27, 2009, and run for six consecutive nights. While a 30-minute introduction to the film series played every hour in the park’s auditorium during this day-long event, more than 30 exhibitors, representing parks, natural areas, and open-space organizations at the Federal, State, tribal, regional, local, and non-profit levels, set-up outside for the day’s more than 500 visitors. Late morning winds, however, drove most of the exhibitors into the limited protection of the park’s covered breezeway.

At the CCNM booth, Monument Manager Rick Hanks and Palm Springs/South Coast Monuments Interpretative Specialist Tracy Albrecht handed out CCNM and National Landscape Conservation System (NLCS) brochures and CCNM pencils and posters, discussed the CCNM and NLCS, and provided the opportunity for kids to make pelican headbands or borrow binoculars.
