Adopter molds a champion

When Lauren West adopted a 2-year-old mustang, she never imagined it would take her to the state gymkhana championship.

She adopted Dixie Running Star 14 years ago at an adoption in Vallejo, her first mustang. “Ever since I was a little kid, it was something I wanted to do,” she said. (text continues below)

She started out using the horse for trail riding and other activities before taking up gymkhana in 2002. In 2007 she qualified for the state finals and set three personal-best times in the 2008 event.

She was hoping for fourth-place in 2008, but thought she had fallen short as the list of finalists went on -- and on -- without her name. Then the announcement finally came that she took first place. “It was the first time all week I about fell off my horse,” she said.
