RAC tours Cache Creek, explores recreation topics

Members of the BLM's Northwest California Resource Advisory Council learned about the Cache Creek Natural Area and hiked one of the BLM's newest  recreation trails,  when they met Nov. 20 and 21.

During a field trip to the 70,000-acre Natural Area, members learned of recent land acquisitions and other improvements for wildlife and recreation access.

Below, RAC members gathered on an overlook deck at the Cowboy Camp trailhead to hear Natural Area Manager Gregg Mangan explain the significance the Cache Creek Area holds for wildlife.  An interpretive sign, second photo, discusses benefits for tule elk.  RAC members also learned about the 27,000-acre Cache Creek Wilderness, established in 2006.

RAC members got a close look at the area's natural resources, when they hiked the High Bridge Trail, below.  Upper reaches of the trail provided excellent views of oak woodlands that highlight the natural area, second photo.

During their business meeting in Woodland, the RAC discussed issues including the Recreation and Public Purposes Act, the North Coast Geotourism Initiative, and activities in the BLM's Ukiah, Arcata and Redding field offices.
