Point Arena Mayor is BLM's Newest 'Rock Star'

Leslie Dahlhoff, mayor of the coastal town of Point Arena, has been honored for her work in formation of the Point Area Gateway to the California Coastal National Monument (CCNM).

Below, CCNM Manager Rick Hanks presents the mayor with a CCNM Rock Star Award during a meeting of the Point Arena Gateway Committee.

"Leslie has been enthusiastic about establishing Point Arena as a gateway to the California Coastal National Monument," Hanks said.  "Under her leadership Point Arena became the first California city to sign a gateway agreement."

As a gateway community, Point Arena cooperates with the BLM to provide information about the monument and the unique attributes of the gateway area.  The BLM provides information about monument gateways in its outreach, interpretive and educational materials related to the CCNM.

The Point Arena area is a great place for outstanding views of the CCNM rocks and islands (photo descriptions below)

  
Above, rocks of the California Coastal National Monument provide the scenic backdrop along the Point Arena coast.  The Point Arena Lighthouse is a primary attraction (second photo).  The Point Arena Lighthouse Keepers' Association is also a gateway member.   (The lighthouse is now undergoing extensive renovation)  . From the sea, Fish Rock is another primary feature in the CCNM (third photo).

The BLM Stornetta Public Lands, below, provide great vantage points for the monument:

The Resource Management Plan for the CCNM identifies a dozen gateway locations on the California Coast.  They are in various stages of formation.  The Point Arena committee has just completed its first brochure and has a CCNM informational kiosk in place in the shopping boardwalk at the municipal pier.
