Directions to Chappie-Shasta OHV Area

Chappie-Shasta OHV Staging Area and Shasta Campground
The Chappie-Shasta OHV Staging Area is located on the western side of Shasta Dam. The day use staging area offers parking, unloading ramps, vault toilets, shaded picnic area, trail access, and information kiosks. There is no fee for using the day use area.  Camping is available at the campground for $10 per vehicle per night.

Directions: From Redding, take Interstate 5 north about 10 miles to the Shasta Dam exit. Follow Shasta Dam Boulevard 2 miles; turn right on Lake Boulevard to Shasta Dam. To cross Shasta Dam you must present a valid driver's license and vehicle registration, and your vehicle and trailers may be subject to inspection.  After crossing Shasta Dam, turn left and travel 2 miles to the facilities.

 

Copley Mountain OHV Staging Area
The Copley Mountain OHV Staging Area is a day use only OHV staging facility providing parking for 15-20 vehicles, information kiosks, toilet facilities, unloading ramps, and trail access. From the Copley Mountain OHV Staging Area you can access either route #4 or #3. Both of these routes provide southern access into the Chappie-Shasta OHV Area. Route #4 is recommended for advance riders only, while route #3 is suitable for beginner to expert level OHV users. If you travel north on route #3 for approximately 7 miles you will reach the Chappie-Shasta OHV Staging Area and Shasta Campground. Route #3 is a roughly graded road and 4-wheel drive is recommended.

Directions: From Redding, take highway 299 about 1 mile west of the city limits to Iron Mountain Road. Turn right on Iron Mountain Road and continue for about 6 miles to Matheson Road. Turn right at Matheson Road where you see the Chappie-Shasta OHV Area sign. Copley Mountain Staging is on the right side of Matheson Road about one tenth of a mile from Iron Mountain Road.

 

Big Gulch Area
Access to the northwestern portions of the Chappie-Shasta OHV Area is also possible. This area is known as the Big Gulch area. Big Gulch is a desirable OHV user destination due to the large continuous blocks of public land, remote rugged terrain, diverse and challenging trail network, and spectacular views of Mount Shasta, Mount Lassen, and the Trinity Alps.

Directions: You may access this area by crossing Shasta Dam and traveling over Bohemotash Mountain on route #1. Motorcycle and ATV riders can access this area by trail from either Chappie-Shasta OHV Staging Area or Copley Mountain Staging Area (see MAP).
