Current Conditions at Chappie-Shasta OHV Area

Due to Homeland Security guidelines, an access permit must be acquired at least 72 hours in advance in order to cross Shasta Dam. Permits are free and available throught the Shasta Dam Bureau of Reclamation (BOR). Please call the BOR at 530-275-1554 to apply for a permit. If the Homeland Security Advisory System - Threat Level is at orange or above, no one will be allowed to cross the dam.

The campground below Shasta Dam is open and reservations can be made through the Forest Service at 530-275-1587.

In order to operate motorcycles and ATVs within the Chappie-Shasta OHV area, your vehicle must be equipped with current registration and an operational Forest Service approved spark arrestor.

During the winter and spring months, trails at the higher elevations are often snowed in for extended periods of time. The creek crossings at Cottonwood Creek and Motion Creek become impassable during periods of heavy rainfall.

Always ride with caution; road and trail conditions are subject to change drastically during this season due to sever weather conditions.

Please use good judgment when riding during these winter months. If the weather is poor or the trails are too muddy, let the area dry out for a couple of days before riding. You are only damaging the trails and endangering your own safety by riding in these conditions.

The winter months can be cold and wet. Be prepare for conditions to change quickly.

  • Never ride alone
  • Carry and drink plenty of water
  • Recognize the signs of hypothermia and bring winter survival supplies
  • Tell someone where you are going and when you are expected to return
