Camping
Campgrounds and other public lands open for camping are available for visitors to stay for not more that 14 days during any calendar year. This can be 14 consecutive days or through a number of separate visits.
There are three developed campsites available within the BLM Redding Resource area. All three campgrounds are in Trinity county - Douglas City, Junction City, and Steel Bridge campgrounds. Two primitive camping areas are available at Steiner Flat (Trinity River) and Stateline(Klamath River). There are many group camping areas, within the Redding Resource Area, available via permit such as Reading Island. To reserve the Reading Island group camping area fill out the Reading Island application. Call the Redding Field Office for more information. Take a look at the map of the Trinity River area showing the location of many of these facilities. There are detailed descriptions of each site below.
Douglas City Campground
This area offers tent/trailer camping, a day use area with river and beach access.
Location: Along the Trinity River. Follow State Highway 299 to Steiner Flat Road, one-half mile west of Douglas City.
Elevation: 1,500 feet.
Facilities: 20 tent/trailer campsites, (MAX. trailer length is 28 feet), group picnic area, picnic tables, telephone, beach, paved loop road, flush and vault toilets, potable water, and fire rings.
Vegetation: Ponderosa Pine, Douglas fir, Oaks, & Madrone.
Stay Limit: 14 days per calendar year.
Use Season: May 1 through October 30
Use Fee: $10.00 per vehicle, per night
Nearest Services: Douglas City and Weaverville.
There is a $2 fee to use the day use area if you are not camping in the Douglas City campground.
Junction City Campground
This area offers tent/trailer camping with easy access from Highway 299.
Location: 1 1/2 miles west of Junction City on State Highway 299.
Elevation: 1,500 feet.
Vegetation: Ponderosa Pine, Madrone.
Facilities: 22 tent/trailer campsites, paved loop road, vault toilets, potable water, fire rings, and picnic tables. MAX trailer length is 40 feet.
Stay Limit: 14 days per calendar year.
Use Season: May 1 through November 30.
Use Fee: $10.00 per vehicle, per night
Nearest Services: Junction City or Weaverville.
Steel Bridge Campground
This site offers tent/trailer camping, a day-use area, and access to the Trinity River.
Location: About three miles east of Douglas City on State Highway 299, then two miles north on Steel Bridge Road.
Elevation: 1,700 feet.
Facilities: Nine camping sites with picnic tables and fire rings, day-use parking area, vault toilet. No potable water. MAX trailer length is 20 feet.
Vegetation: Ponderosa Pine, Willows, Oaks.
Stay Limit: 14 days per calendar year.
Use Season: Open year-round.
Use Fee: $5.00
Nearest Services: Douglas City and Weaverville.
Steiner Flat Camping Area
This area offers primitive tent camping and access to the Trinity River.
Location: Public lands along the Trinity River on Steiner Flat Road, past Douglas City campground.
Elevation: 1,500 feet.
Facilities: No toilets, no potable water.
Stay Limit: 14 days per calendar year.
Use Season: Year-round.
Use Fee: None.
Nearest Services: Douglas City or Weaverville.
Stateline on the Klamath River
This area offers primitive camping, a primitive river access ramp, and picnic area.
Location: About 6.5 miles north of Copco Lake on Ager-Beswick Road
Elevation: 2,900 feet.
Facilities: Primitiveboat ramp, picnic tables, and vault toilets .
Vegetation: Oak, grassland, pines.
Stay Limit: 14 days per calendar year.
Use Season: Year-round
Use Fee: There is no use fee for this area
Directions: From Redding take I-5 North to the Hornbrook exit, go east on Copco Road about 12 miles, turn north at the Horseshoe Ranch sign.
