National Public Lands Day:  Big Morongo Canyon Preserve Trail Work

The 31,000 acre Big Morongo Canyon Preserve and Area of Critical Environmental Concern (ACEC) is managed by BLM to preserve its outstanding natural and scenic values as well as recreational opportunities within a preserve environment.  Located approximately 15 miles north of Palm Springs, California, this area is characterized by steep canyons, rugged terrain and desert oases.  The Preserve includes an internationally recognized desert oasis and marsh that is one of the 10 largest cottonwood and willow riparian (stream) habitats in California.  It is also identified by the Audubon Society as one of the most important avian habitat areas in California.  Removal of the Scotch broom will restore the habitat, allowing for native vegetation to grow back.

WHAT VOLUNTEERS WILL DO:
Volunteers will assist BLM staff and local community groups with the removal of Scotch broom (Cytisus scoparius), an invasive plant species which has taken over parts of the Preserve.  Volunteers will receive a NPLD t-shirt and a Fee Free pass good at any BLM, NPS, or FWS site that charges an entry fee.

WHEN:  Saturday, September 24th at 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

WHERE TO MEET:  Volunteers are to meet at the Big Morongo Canyon Preserve parking lot at 11055 East Drive in Morongo Valley (a Google Maps search for "Big Morongo Canyon Preserve, Morongo Valley, CA" will provide a street map).  From I-10, take Highway 62 north from the Palm Springs / Desert Hot Springs area, into Morongo Valley.  Just beyond the traffic light in Morongo Valley, turn right on East Drive and follow it around to the entrance of the Big Morongo Canyon Preserve and the parking area.

WHAT TO BRING:  Gloves will be provided, but supplies are limited, so volunteers are encouraged to bring their own as well as other personal items such as sunscreen, hat, closed toed shoes, lunch, etc.  Light snacks (granola bars, chips, etc) and drinks (waters, Gatorade) will be provided.  Volunteers under the age of 18 will have to have their parent or guardian sign the Volunteer Services Agreement.
