Project Vitals

Proposed Location:  10 miles east of Desert Center along Interstate 10, approximately halfway between the cities of Indio and Blythe, in Riverside County, California.

Electricity Production Capacity:  500 megawatts

Company: EDF Renewable Development - Palen Solar III, LLC

Acreage:  3,896 acres

Status:  The original project proponent was sold to BrightSource Energy. BrightSource Energy has sold the project to EDF Renewable Development. The BLM is currently in the process of preparing a Supplemental Draft Environmental Impact Statement to analyze the Applicant’s proposed technology change from a solar thermal parabolic trough project to a solar thermal power tower project to the current proposed technology - solar photovoltaic.

Electrical Transmission Connection:  A re-routed 4.5-mile 230kV gen-tie line will connect the project to the Red Bluff Substation.


Public Comments 

Public Comment:  The public comment period began June 29, 2016 and will end on September 3, 2016 (30 days after the second public meeting).

Two public information meetings have been scheduled:

  • The first meeting was held on Wednesday, June 29, 2016, 3:30-5:30 at Palm Springs City Hall, 3200 E. Tahquitz Canyon Way, Palm Springs, CA 92262
  • The second meeting will be held on Thursday, August 4, 2016, 3:30-5:30 at Palm Springs City Hall, 3200 E. Tahquitz Canyon Way, Palm Springs, CA 92262
