The barren hills in the Mecca Hills Wilderness Area create an interesting pattern across this desert landscape.

Palm Springs - South Coast Field Office

Point Vicente

Welcome to the home page of the Palm Springs-South Coast Field Office within BLM’s California Desert District. Our jurisdiction extends from the coast to the desert, and includes BLM lands within all or part of four Southern California counties: Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside and San Diego. This covers nearly 1.7 million acres of public lands, of which 1.5 million acres are within the California Desert Conservation Area, and 137,000 acres are within the South Coast Resource Area. The lands we administer include the Santa Rosa & San Jacinto Mountains National Monument, the California Coastal National Monument, and a wide range of habitats and geography and diverse populations of plants, animals and people. The PSSC Field Office encompasses an area with over 20 million residents; the “Inland Empire” is one of the fastest growing regions in the United States; this area is among the highest “biodiversity” regions in the United States. In order to manage the complex biological resources and the diverse uses of the public lands within our jurisdiction, we depend on cooperative conservation efforts and partnerships with a wide variety of agencies.

To accomplish our mission, our staff includes Field Office and National Monument manager and administrators; lands, minerals, recreation, cultural, biological and resources specialists; interns and volunteers; fire response and fuels management personnel; and law enforcement rangers.

The major issues and projects we deal with include alternative energy generation and transmission projects, wilderness and habitat conservation planning and management, desert restoration, land use planning, management of two preserves (Big Morongo Canyon Preserve and Dos Palmas Preserve), the Coachella Valley Multi-Species Habitat Conservation and Trails Plan, US/Mexico border lands management, border security, and cross-border conservation initiatives.
