Trampas Wash Hike

Hikers in Trampas Wash, Chemehuevi Mountains Wilderness

Trampas Wash is a traditional route to the Colorado River where one can enjoy desert seclusion on their way to the cool water of the river. The trail begins at the vehicle gate off Route 95 at Mile Marker 46.6. The first few miles consist of an open, mostly flat desert area. The trail then heads into the wilderness interior, surrounded by the impressive white, granite mountains. The wash becomes isolated by encompassing slopes and walls of the surrounding mountains.  At the trails fork in a large open wash area, there is a change in the rocks’ colors to red.  The rocks have interesting formations with “cubby” like holes and intents.  To the Northeast, a trail goes to Red Rock Falls and Devil’s Elbow.  Trampas Wash continues Southeast (don’t miss the turn), again the trail becomes encompassed by slopes and walls of the surrounding mountains. Continue east to where the trail opens to the welcoming Colorado River.
