In 1996 the BLM was selected to administer lands which are now the Fort Ord National Monument. As part of the Habitat Management Plan (HMP) for the former Fort Ord, BLM will ultimately acquire an approximate 15,000 acres to create a natural resource area which includes 12 habitat types such as riparian forest, perennial grasslands and vernal pools. These lands are essential to the survival of sensitive plants and animals.
