Volunteer Program

September 7-30, 2007

Established in 1992, the "Caring for the Land" exhibit is a permanent outdoor education site managed by four cooperating government agencies, the Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Forest Service, the Los Angeles County Fire Department, and Metropolitan Water District of Southern California. The site it staffed for 3 weeks during the L.A. County Fair which has an attendance of 1.3 million visitors. The one-acre habitat site showcases native flora from five ecosystems common to southern California, an amphitheater, an information kiosk, a hosted fire lookout tower and free tree seedling. This year, the exhibit was part of National Public Land Day as visitors learned about land ethics, conservation, and public land diversity in southern California.

This year activities at the site exploded with the help of hundreds of volunteers including the Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts,  AT&T volunteers, and the Backcountry Horsemans Association to name a few.  Site visitors experience Camp Smokey and got to saw a log and watch it being milled, climbed on fire engines, made environmental buttons, held snakes and lizards, petted burros Leroy and Sherman and toke a nature hike.  Other activities were making smores by a fire, visits by the "Leave No Trace" travelling trainers, and magic shows.
