Volunteer Program

The Bishop field Office held five events to commemorate the 14th annual National Public Lands Day.

Alabama Hills Community Spirit Day - This project included improvement of the Alabama Hills entrance station and a pre-Lone Pine Film Festival cleanup of the hills.  Partners included the Lone Pine Film Festival Committee, Lone Pine History Museum, and the Lone Pine Chamber of Commerce

Mt. Tom Bitterbrush Planting Project - Volunteers planted locally grown bitterbrush seedlings, a native desert plant, in habitats destroyed by wildfires on the flanks of Mt. Tom, west of Bishop. Two hundred, two-year old plants were planted in the area that is an important mule deer winter habitat. Bitterbrush is essential forage for the deer’s long term health.  The restoration of Mt. Tom is a long term project in an area burned in 1995.  The California Deer Association was a partner for this project.

Bodie Hills Aspen Restoration Project  - Volunteers helped construct aspen grove exclosures to help restore aspen grove plant community and wildlife habitat values. BLM also provided natural history and land use history of the project site.  Partners included the Eastern Sierra Quail Unlimited and California Deer Association.

Poleta OHV Area Boundary Marking - With the help of local off-highway vehicle clubs, volunteers helped post the south boundary of the OHV open area using cadastral surveying methods and equipment. Education about cadastral survey mission and techniques was provided including how to subdivide a section into quarters and a lesson on the use of a total station and GPS surveying equipment.

“Eastern Sierra National Public Lands Day – Past, Present, and Future - - - An Interpretive Display” at White Mountain Public Lands Information Center (PLIC) in Bishop, CA.  The display showed viewers the past and present activities and opportunities on how to become involved in current and future programs.
