A seagull flies over the California Coastal National Monument which stretches along the entire coast of California and extends 12 miles into the Pacific Ocean.  The Monument includes 20,000 rocks, islands, pinnacles and reefs.

Thermometer showing 80% completionFor 2011, the campground is closed for construction.  At this time there is no projected opening date for the 2012.

Current completion status as of 9/30/2011:

  • Water tank installed.
  • Lantern holders installed.
  • Pull through sites completed.
  • All picnic tables installed.
  • 3 restrooms installed.
  • All  firerings installed.
  • Gate and Kiosk installed.

While active construction is taking place, no public access to Goodale Creek inside the campground is allowed.  However, fishing is allowed below the campground.

 


 

Campround Host Positions Available

BLM is currently looking for Campground Hosts for all Bishop Field Office campgrounds for the 2012 season.  For more information please contact Becky Hutto, Park Ranger at (760) 872-5008. 


Directions: 10 miles north of Independence on US Hwy 395, then 2 miles west on Aberdeen Road. Follow signs to campground.

(Generally open second week of April through November 1st.  Fee: $5.00/night/site. Maximum Stay Limit is 14 days.)
Elevation - 4,000 ft. Campground is tucked into the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Range below a volcanic rock flow. Campground looks east, out to the Inyo Mountains Range and Owens Valley. Climate is high desert: Spring and fall are ideal times for camping. Summers can be very hot and dry. Some trees and willows are scattered throughout the sites. Aberdeen, nearby, has a very small store and café. Closest amenities (grocery, gas) are south in Independence (12 miles) or north, in Big Pine (15 miles).
