Desert Discovery Trail Project

Projects will consist of constructing a nature trail throughout 8 acres of public land adjacent to the Desert Discovery Center, build several 12' by 12' shade ramadas to be used as educational stations for visiting school children, graffiti removal, erecting fencing and a general clean up of the areas.

Directions to site :
From I-15 North, exit Barstow Road Travel north on Barstow Road for approx. 1/2 mile. Turn right into parking lot of the Desert Discovery Center at 831 Barstow Road.
We suggest you wear long pants, work boots, hat, and sunscreen. Bring work gloves and water.
Project 1: General Cleanup
Objective : Remove trash surrounding the Desert Discovery Trail area.
Tasks: Pick up trash in the Desert Discovery Trail area. The work consists of picking up scattered household trash, broken glass, and discarded yard waste. The site can accessed from Lookout Lane.
Requirements: Participants can expect to walk on uneven ground. Bending and lifting is required. Pickup trucks are recommended for driving to the site and for hauling trash to a central location.
Project 2: Graffiti Removal
Objective: Paint over the graffiti on the wall of the adjacent apartment complex.
Tasks: The wall of the adjacent apartment complex is covered with graffiti. We will paint the entire wall to cover the graffiti.
Requirements: Participants will be climbing along uneven surfaces as well as bending and reaching. Experience working with paint using a brush and roller will be useful.
Project 3: Constructing trail segments throughout the 8 acres adjacent to the Desert Discovery Center
Objective : Construct several segments of trails that will connect to education stations throughout the 8 acres of public land adjacent to the Desert Discovery Center.
Tasks : Trail construction will include building a couple of switchbacks and some hillside construction for 36" to 48" wide trail that will traverse throughout 8 acres of public land adjacent to the Desert Discovery Center.
Requirements : Participants can expect to walk on uneven ground with a lot of bending. Hand tools consist of the shovel, Pulaski, McLeod and rakes. Prior trail construction is helpful but not required.
Project 4: Build shade ramadas for educational stations along trail
Objective : Build 2 12' by 12' shade ramadas that will be used for teacher presentations along the interpretive trail.
Tasks : Footings will be in place by NPLD. Erect new shade ramadas and apply stain.
Requirements : Construction experience helpful. Bending, lifting, and stretching will be required.
Project 5: Clear debris and vegetation from future outdoor amphitheater site
Objective : Remove debris and clear vegetation in preparation of the future outdoor amphitheater site..
Tasks : Using hand tools such as shovels, rakes, picks, etc., remove all dead and downed debris as well as existing vegetation in preparation of the future outdoor amphitheatre site to be built in 2009.
Requirements : Participants can expect to walk on uneven ground. Bending and lifting is required. Wheelbarrows will be used for hauling debris and vegetation to a central location.
Project 6: Paint Picnic Tables
Objective : Paint existing picnic tables under the lunch ramada.
Tasks : Work will involve painting the existing picnic tables that are under the lunch ramada.
Requirements : Experience working with paint using a brush and roller will be useful.
Project 7: Repair Trail Erosion problem
Objective : Redirect drainage along east side of discovery garden area along existing trail.
Tasks : Using hand tools such as shovels, rakes, picks, and wheelbarrows, slightly re-level the walking area around garden near back gate. Rain runoff will be re-directed down the back slope, away from the pond. Small rocks will be gathered and placed to slow runoff.
Requirements: Participants can expect to walk on uneven ground. Bending and lifting is required. Wheelbarrows will be used for moving dirt and rocks short distances.
Project 8: Clean up Property along Barstow Road
Objective : Clean up the property facing Barstow Road.
Tasks : Pick-up and remove trash and dead debris, back fill pits, and rake area level.
Requirements: Participants can expect to walk on uneven ground. Bending and lifting is required. hand tools consist of shovel, rakes and wheelbarrows. Shovels and rakes are needed to push and level dirt back into small pits. trash and debris will have to be moved by wheelbarrow to central dump collection site
