The Bakersfield Field Office manages 600,000 acres of public lands in eight Central California counties that stretch from the California Coast to the crest of the Sierra Nevada range, as well as 900,000 acres of federal mineral estate. Public lands managed by the Bakersfield office include the quarter-million-acre Carrizo Plain National Monument, the Piedras Blancas Light Station Outstanding Natural Area north of Cambria, the San Joaquin River Gorge and the Atwell Island Land Retirement Demonstration Project located at Alpaugh, Tulare County.
