Piedras Blancas Light Station

Outstanding Natural Area

Restoration

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has been tasked by the public to restore the site to a period in its history when the light station played a significant role as an aid to navigation.

There are four existing structures at Piedras Blancas Light Station that are on the National Register of Historic Buildings The storage building and fuel oil house have been restored and the fog signal building is under restoration. The first phase of lighthouse restoration has been competed and involved the removal of lead-based paint, patching of cracks, and painting of the exterior and interior. The final phase will be costly, involving stabilization of the unreinforced brick tower and reconstruction of the missing upper three levels: fourth floor, watch room, and lantern, plus replacing the first order Fresnel lens.

Buildings of historic significance, or that are of adaptive use, will be reconstructed/replicated. The laundry building, watch room, storage shed, and elevated water tower have been reconstructed. Other structures that will be replicated in the future include a two story residence used by multiple keepers and a single family keeper’s cottage.

Over the years, the Piedras Blancas lighthouse, which is on the National Register of Historic Places, became soiled and discolored. In 2012 the lighthouse was painted gleaming white.
