Piedras Blancas Light Station

Outstanding Natural Area

Outstanding Natural Area

On May 8, 2008, President Bush signed into law the Consolidated Natural Resources Act of 2008. Section 201 of this Act of Congress (Public Law 110-229, 122 STAT 759 Sec. 201), designated Piedras Blancas Historic Light Station as an Outstanding Natural Area and added the light station to the Bureau of Land Management's National Landscape Conservation System.

Besides acquisition, Sec. 201. (d) (7) provided the following mechanism to expand the Piedras Blancas Outstanding Natural Area: "Any lands or interest in lands adjacent to the Outstanding Natural Area acquired by the United States after the date of enactment of this Act shall be added to and administered as part of the Outstanding Natural Area."

On February 24, 2011, BLM and the California Department of Parks and Recreation signed a Cooperative Agreement regarding management of 208.8 acres lands adjacent to the Piedras Blancas Outstanding Natural Area. With this Agreement, BLM's management role expanded to include additional 208.8 acres of State Park land along the coastline. On September 25, 2013, BLM and the California Department of Parks and Recreation entered into second Cooperative Agreement. With this Agreement the Outstanding Natural Area was expanded to include additional State Park land along the coastline. The expanded boundary encompasses the entire Piedras Blancas Northern Elephant Seal Rookery, providing suitable habitat for birthing, breeding, molting and resting.

The resulting 476 acre Piedras Blancas Outstanding Natural Area is co-managed by the Bureau of Land Management and California Department of Parks and Recreation.
