Geology Links PaleontologySeveral world class paleontological sites such as the Maricopa and McKittrick brea pits, Shark Tooth Hill, Bena Road petrified forest, Chico Martinez Creek and the Bopesta Formation-Horse Canyon fossil beds attract scientists to the public lands managed by the Bakersfield Field Office of the Bureau of Land Management. Please note that vertebrate fossils are protected by law. They can not be collected without a permit. Usually no permit is needed for small scale collection on invertebrate specimens.
