Atwell Island Land Restoration Project


National Public Lands Day 2013

Date: 28 September 2013

Time: 8:00am - 2:00 pm

Where: South of Alpaugh, Tulare County, meet at the bunkhouse.

Directions: From State Route 99, at the community of Earlimart take the Alpaugh exit (exit #65) continue west 12 miles on Sierra Ave (also known as County Route J22, or Avenue 56).

From the middle of Alpaugh, at the intersection with Road 38 (also known as Tule Rd) travel south 1.5 miles to Ave. 42. Turn right (west) .1 mile, then go down the driveway .1 mile to the bunkhouse.

Assignments for Volunteers:

  • Pick up litter at Atwell Island
  • Clear vegetation around water control structures
  • Trail maintenance around foot trail and observation platform
  • Picking bladder pod bush seeds.

The BLM will provide drinks (water) and will also provide a lunch for participants starting 12:00 pm.

A raffle for participants and a tour of the site at the wetlands will be offered to participants and others interested in Atwell Island.

Participants are encouraged to bring sturdy shoes, gloves, hat, sun screen, and wear long sleeves and pants. We can provide trash bags, seed collecting bags, disposable gloves, trash sticks, and safety vests.
