Welcome to the King Range National Conservation Area "The Lost Coast"
(Established by Congress October 21, 1970, Public Law 91-476)

A spectacular meeting of land and sea is certainly the dominant feature of King Range National Conservation Area. Mountains seem to thrust straight out of the surf; a precipitous rise rarely surpassed on the continental U.S. coastline. King Peak, the highest point at 4,087 feet, is only three miles from the ocean.

The King Range covers 68,000 acres and extends along 35 miles of coastline between the mouth of the Mattole River and Sinkyone Wilderness State Park. Here the landscape was too rugged for highway building, forcing State Highway 1 and U.S. 101 inland. The remote region is known as California's Lost Coast, and is only accessed by a few back roads. The recreation opportunities here are as diverse as the landscape. The Douglas-fir clad peaks attract hikers, hunters, campers and mushroom collectors, while the coast beckons to surfers, anglers, beachcombers, and abalone divers to name a few.

We hope you enjoy your visit.

Advisory:

Tuesday, May 13, Humboldt County will be performing maintenance on Lighthouse Road. Travel delays of up to 2 hours can be expected.  If you plan to use Lighthouse Road to  travel to or from the Mattole Campground or other BLM managed lands please give yourself plenty of time to reach your destination.

Fire Restrictions: NONE

"Even though we've had rain, people still need to be careful with fire," says BLM Fire Management Officer Tim Jones.  "Fires should never be used on windy days, and it is imperative that campers fully extinguish campfires before leaving a campsite."

Important Notice: Backcountry Permits

FREE , self-service permits are required for all individuals and groups of families or friends spending at least one night in the King Range backcountry, including the popular Lost Coast Trail.  Permits are available in self-service boxes at King Range trailheads, King Range Project Office in Whitethorn, and Bureau of Land Management Arcata Field Office in Arcata.  Hikers will be asked to complete a brief form, leaving one part in the permit collection box or at the office, and keeping the second part with them while in King Range.  Special Recreation Permits are required for all commercial and organized, noncommerical groups.

  • Rattlesnake Ridge Trail - Passable.
  • Miller Loop - Not maintained for 2 years and likely impassable.

  • Lightning Trail and Maple Loop (King Peak area) - Passable.
  • Cooskie Creek, Cooskie Spur, and Spanish Ridge trails - Unknown this year, but not recommended due to vegetation overgrowth.
