Description:

Low growing annual with several stems 3 to 6 inches (7.5-15 cm) long, simple to branched near base and somewhat decumbent; smooth and glabrous throughout.  Leaves pinnately divided into 5-7 segments. Flowers on slender stalks, rounded & urn shaped; petals white & equal to or shorter than the sepals.

Distribution:

Cascade Range foothills (east & west side) and high Cascade Range (Shasta County), and on western edge of Modoc Plateau; into Oregon.  Found on adjacent Forest Service lands and located on BLM lands of Klamath Falls FO.

Habitat:

Vernal pools and ephemeral drainages of open pine-oak woodlands & mixed ceanothus chaparral and ecotonal to western juniper & low sagebrush communities.  Typically in shallow, rocky clay soils of volcanic origin.  3,100 – 3,600 feet (950 – 1,100 m).

Flowering Period: April to May

Similar Plants:

L. f. ssp. floccosa but ssp. floccosa is wooly throughout while ssp. bellingeriana is glabrous throughout.
