Day on the River 2004

The spectacular Trinity River Canyon was the backdrop for a day of fun and
excitement for 50 northern California families, when the Bureau of Land Management
and local volunteers hosted the Sixth Annual Day on the River float trip.
The three-and-a-half-hour float between Lewiston and Douglas City was provided
for children who are undergoing medical treatment for serious illnesses or disabilities.
Their parents and other family members were also welcome on the trip. In all,
about 200 people enjoyed the crystal clear waters on a warm, sunny day.
BLM Director Kathleen Clarke and State Director Mike Pool joined the festivities
this year, and thanked the many agencies, organizations and businesses who came
together to offer the adventure for the children.
The Shasta and Trinity county medical community, along with staffs from the
US Forest Service, Bureau of Reclamation, Fish and Wildlife Service, National
Park Service, California Department of Fish and Game, California Department
of Forestry and Fire Protection, the California Department of Boating and Waterways
and the BLM were the key organizing agencies. The BLM Redding, Folsom and Eagle
Lake field offices helped provide rafts and raft handlers.
Key to the success were the contributions of individuals and businesses. Trinity
River rafting and fishing guides donated their boats and boat handlers to accommodate
families and provide safety patrols. Volunteers from area volunteer fire departments
provided emergency medical technician standby, and members of the Trinity County
Search and Rescue Unit patrolled the river in kayaks, providing an added measure
of safety.
Following the float trip, the children and their families were treated to a
hamburger barbecue, complete with a prize raffle. Food and prizes were donated
by area businesses.
Local contributors and organizers included the Trinity County Deputy Sheriff's
Association, Trinity County Unified School District, E. Clampus Vitus Chapter
62, Redwood and Rivers, Dave's Guide Services, Wilderness Adventures, Welch
Enterprises, Shasta Nutrition Center, Cosco.net, Redding Lions Breakfast Club,
Sons of Italy, KWCA, Douglas City Firebelles, Douglas City Fire Department,
Trinity Life Support Unit, Disabled Adventure Outfitters, LEAP Humboldt State,
Trinity Rafting, McColl's Dairy, Cole Construction, Dr. Fish, Redding Emblem
