"I like my flower beds among all the sand around here."

Birgit Hoover (pronounced Beer-git) is actually a native of Germany, from a city called Fulda which is about an hour north of Frankfurt.  When you speak with her you can hear the gentle and softened rhythms of her homeland in her voice.  Birgit is a resident of Barstow now, with her husband of 21 years, Rick.  Birgit and Rick met when he was stationed in Germany at a military base that is no longer there.  She has been in the United States since 1988.

She works out of the Barstow Field Office as a Supply Technician handling the fleet, property, mail and the library.  Birgit originally came to the Bureau of Land Management through a SCEP (Student Career Experience Program) position.  She has been with us for about three and a half years and is very excited about having completed the SCEP requirements and having become a full-time federal employee.  Before coming to the BLM Birgit worked with the Army Air Force Exchange Service for the German government.

Birgit holds her A.A. degree in Business and is currently working on her B.A. degree in Management.  When she is looking to recharge or wind down Birgit turns to gardening.  When asked if she grows vegetables she quips that she can buy those in a store.  "I love all my flowers," she says.  Then she paints a pretty picture of her garden as she describes it among the sands of Barstow with a wry laugh.
