Public Contact Specialist
Bakersfield Field Office

"I love working with the public and bringing awareness of BLM's mission in protecting our public lands."
Ken Hock is a Public Contact Specialist in the Bakersfield Field Office, and a resident of Bakersfield.  He specializes in customer service for our internal and external customers.  In his public position his responsibilities include public awareness and outreach " inform our constituents of the mission of the BLM...".  Ken also works closely with the U.S. Forest Service in much the same capacity.  He is also the Volunteer Coordinator, supporting the Central California Region.

Additionally, Ken is one of two EEO (Equal Employment Opportunity) Counselors.  The responsibilities of this position include counseling employees who feel they have been discriminated against, or simply couseling them about personal problems at home or at work.  Ken brings a deep understanding of the challenges that an EEO employee might face -- as a relatively young adult he lost most of his sight to a rare eye disease.

Before this life-changing event though Ken was in the Air Force, where he spent eight years.  His duties included aircraft mechanic, environmental systems specialst, and field protocol.  This last arena of responsibility saw Ken escorting VIP's in Washington, D.C., Suffolk, England and Omaha, Nebraska.  Ken attended the University of Nebraska at Omaha, Creighton Medical School and Bakersfield College where he majored in sociology.

Ken finds his focus and his energy in knowing that he is giving his best in serving the public and his co-workers.  He is very grateful for the opportunities that have been presented to him and for the wonderful people that he has met and works with.  "I'm blessed.  What an honor and a privilege."
