Michelle was born and raised in Sacramento.  She left at age 22 to join the Navy, where she served for 11 years as an intelligence specialist in such places as Lowrey Air Force Base, Colorado, Patuxent River Naval Air Station, Maryland and the Joint Intelligence Operations Center in Naples, Italy during the Gulf War.  She received the Navy Achievement Medal for her duty during Desert Storm.  She also received the Navy and Marine Corps Meritorious Service Medal for service with the reserve program as an instructor.
