"Fate and incredible good fortune brought me here!"

Raised in Riverside, California John Bogacki is now a resident of Bakersfield, California, except of course, when he lives at a historical landmark!  Four days a week John lives on-site at the Piedras Blancas Light Station near San Simeon.  He is married, his wife Mary is an architect.  Together they have Ivan and Jacob, their two sons, and one granddaughter, Giania who is less than two years old.

John is the Park Manager for the Piedras Blancas Light Station now.  But he has been in federal service for 35 years.  As well as Park Manager for the Bureau of Land Management John has also been an Operations Manager, for 15 years, out of the Bakersfield Field Office, and the Chief of Resource Protection/Visitor Management out of the Barstow Field Office for 5 years.  He was also the Supervisory Outdoor Recreation Planner out of the Barstow Field Office for about a year.  Before coming to the BLM, John spent 11 years with the U.S. Forest Service/Army Corps of Engineers/U.S. Army.

He holds a Bachelor of Science from the California State University at Sacramento in Park Management and Planning.  John's education, together with his years of service contributed to one of his most exciting experiences at BLM.  "Leading the restoration efforts for the Piedras Blancas Light Station, including a 130 year old lighthouse!"

John works with 70+ "wonderful volunteers (who are the heart and soul of [the Light Station's] project".  He also coauthored the original Recreation/Access language for the California Desert Plan.

When he is not working, John restores World War II vintage aircraft, builds furniture, enjoys historic building restoration, cooks, reads "voraciously", and listens to blues/rock music.  And if ever you are looking for a chili cook-off, John is your man.  He has over 300 chili recipes!!
