Editors, news directors and assignment editors: We invite you to join managers and staff from the Bureau of Land Management and the Save the Redwoods League for a celebration to mark the public acquisition of a major portion of the Lacks Creek Watershed. With the assistance of Save the Redwoods League, the BLM was able to acquire from willing sellers 4,500 acres of forests, prairies and streams that provide vital wildlife habitat connectivity. The acquisition is critical to long-term protection of this watershed and Redwood National Park. Who: Kate Anderton, executive director, Save the Redwoods League; Jim Abbott, associate state director, Bureau of Land Management; Lynda Roush, Arcata field manager, BLM; agency and organization staff, cooperating property owners and League donors. What: A picnic, hike and awards presentations at the Lacks Creek Watershed, east of Arcata. When: Friday, Aug. 26, 10:30 a.m. Where: Meet at the BLM Arcata Field Office, 1695 Heindon Rd., Arcata. A vehicle caravan will proceed to Lacks Creek for the celebration at noon. Participants will return to Arcata by 4 p.m. Why: The event celebrates the acquisition and the success of the public-private partnership involving the BLM and Save the Redwoods League. It recognizes the cooperative effort that led to the acquisition. The watershed in anchored by the BLM's old-growth Douglas-fir reserve upstream from the Tall Trees Grove of Redwood National Park The project provides vital habitat connectivity for fish and wildlife throughout the Redwood Creek Basin. Covering the story: There are outstanding photo and video opportunities in this wild landscape. Leaders from the BLM and Save the Redwoods League will be available for interviews. We will provide transportation, lunch and an afternoon in a spectacular landscape. The Partners Save the Redwoods League critical mission is to ensure that the ancient redwood forests survive forever. Thanks to the generous donations by League members, the organization has helped to protect more than 165,000 acres. The Bureau of Land Management's Arcata Field Office is responsible for multiple use management of about 300,000 acres of public lands in Humboldt, Trinity and northern Mendocino counties.
