BLM to Hold Planning Meeting

The Folsom Field Office of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is asking the public to help identify issues and concerns regarding future management of about 44,990 acres of public lands in Tuolumne County at a public meeting on Wednesday, January 26 in the cafeteria at Sonora High School, 430 N. Washington Street in Sonora between 6:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.

Deane Swickard, BLM Folsom Field Manager, said the information gathered at the public meeting will be used by the BLM in the development of a regional Resources Management Plan (RMP) that will guide management activities on public lands under its jurisdiction for the next 20 years.

The Folsom Field Office is responsible for the management of approximately 230,000 acres of public land within fourteen California counties: Amador, Calaveras, Colusa, El Dorado, Mariposa, Merced, Nevada, Placer, Sacramento, San Joaquin, Stanislaus, Sutter, Tuolumne, and Yuba Counties.

Preliminary issues and management concerns have been identified by BLM personnel include: Management of public land resources at the watershed level; management of ecosystems and riparian areas to maintain and improve conditions; management and protection of sensitive, rare, threatened, or endangered species; management of Wild and Scenic River corridors; implementation of the Federal Wildland Fire Policy; fluid and solid mineral development; meeting the needs of local and regional communities; land tenure adjustments, and the consideration of lands for special management designation; cultural resource protection, and the provision of recreation opportunities for the public.
