For Release: Immediate #CCal-05-26 MEDIA ADVISORY Long Rider to Visit Capital City Gene Glasscock, a Texas native who is determined to ride horseback to all state capitols in the lower 48 states, will be riding from McKinley Park to the Capitol Building, arriving at about 10:00 a.m. Thursday morning, December 9. He will be riding Buddy, a gentled mustang adopted from the U.S. Bureau of Land Management after removal from the public rangelands. Persons wishing to ride with Glasscock to the Capitol will meet at McKinley Park at 8:00 a.m. Glasscock a member of the Long Riders Guild, is visiting each state capitol to gain support for The Philips Fund, a scholarship fund that provides under-privileged young adults from Paraguay the chance to attend college in Florida. Sacramento will be the 36th capitol he has visited on his 20,000 mile journey. Glasscock is being aided by local horse people all along his route, with Sacramento being no exception. In the 1980's, Glasscock became the only person known to have ridden from the Arctic Circle to the Equator on horseback. In September, 2002, the indomitable Texan set out again - this time to recreate a ride made by four young cowboys known as the Overland Westerners who began their journey to state capitols in 1912 and finished in 1915. Today, at age 70, Glasscock is the oldest person known to make a journey of this magnitude.
