South Yuba River Planning Meeting to be Held in Washington

The next meeting of the South Yuba River Planning Project will be held in the Nevada County town of Washington on Wednesday evening, November 17, between 6:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., in the Washington School, located at #1 School Street.

At the meeting, participants will make recommendations on a series of management actions proposed to resolve issues such as law enforcement, camping areas, alcohol use, and trespass on private property. The recommendations will form the basis for a draft management plan that will be presented to the general public next year.

Forest Service District Ranger Jeannie Masqueilier said she was hoping for some lively discussion on the river issues. "The more people who speak up in the planning meetings, " she said, "the better all of us will understand what is happening, and this understanding will produce a better plan."

The meeting will be the 38th in a series of planning meetings sponsored by the Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Forest Service, the California Department of Parks and Recreation, and the Nevada County Planning Department. The agencies are using the community-based planning process to create the draft comprehensive management plan. This process directly involves interested private citizens in determining the contents of the draft plan by working in cooperation with each other and the land management agencies.

The South Yuba River is a popular outdoor recreation destination for many Nevada County residents as well as people from outside the region who enjoy the opportunities for swimming, hiking, sunbathing, and nature appreciation in the highly scenic river canyon.
