NORTHEAST CALIFORNIA FIRE SEASON COMES TO A CLOSE

The first, much anticipated rains of autumn have heralded the end of fire season in northeastern California. The Lassen National Forest, Bureau of Land Management and the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection announced that the season officially closes Tuesday, October 19, 2004.

The number of firefighting resources will be reduced, and aerial resources have been released until the start of next year's fire season. Visitors to public lands in Northeastern California are reminded that campfire permits are required for areas outside of campgrounds

The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection also announced the end of this year's open burning suspension. Area residents are not required to have burn permits and may now burn debris piles, and conduct outdoor burning projects. The proclamation rescinding the burn permit suspension was announced by CDF Lassen Modoc Unit Chief Don Posten.

In the City of Susanville, burning permits are required year-round. Burning hours are 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. Other cities have their own burning requirements; anyone planning an outdoor burning project should be sure about local restrictions.

Additional information on burning requirements is available from the nearest Forest Service, BLM or CDF office, or from local fire departments.
