HORSETOWN CLEAR CREEK PRESERVE OFFERS PUBLIC LAND GUIDED HIKES

Outdoor enthusiasts have the opportunity to learn about topics ranging from wild trout and fly fishing to navigating with global positioning system units (GPS) in a series of free guided hikes offered by the Horsetown-Clear Creek Preserve on public lands in the Clear Creek area south of Redding.

The October and November outings are planned for public lands in the Bureau of Land Management's Clear Creek Greenway adjacent to the Horsetown-Clear Creek Preserve.

The following interpretive walks are planned:

  • Sunday, Oct. 10, 1 p.m.: "Autumn Natural History Walk." Participants will meet at the orange pipe gate on the south side of Clear Creek Road about seven miles west of the junction with Highway 273.
  • Sunday, Oct. 17, 1 p.m.: "Finding Your Way." The walk will focus on using GPS units and maps. This walk also starts at the orange pipe gate.
  • Saturday, Oct. 23, 9 a.m.: "Search for the Spawning Salmon." Participants will learn about habitat restoration and the return of spawning salmon to Clear Creek. The outing starts at the steel gate just west of the Sunrise Excavating parking lot.
  • Sunday, Oct. 31, 1 p.m.: "Wild Trout and Fly Fishing in Clear Creek." Interested anglers should meet at the above-referenced orange pipe gate.
  • Saturday, Nov. 13, 10 a.m.: "Geology Walk." Interpreters will discuss the geology of the Clear Creek area. The walk begins at the double blue gate about six miles from the junction with Highway 273 on the south side of Clear Creek Road.

To reach the Clear Creek Greenway and the Preserve from Redding, take Highway 273 south to the junction of Clear Creek Road. Public lands of the Clear Creek Greenway start upstream of Highway 273 and continue to the boundary of the Whiskeytown National Recreation Area.
