National Monument Celebrates Wilderness Season

Bald eagles, wilderness anniversaries, and desert cuckoos are all part of the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains National Monument's Fall Wilderness Season programs.

The free events begin October 4 when National Monument Interpretive Ranger David Korzilius lectures on "Wilderness and Nature" at the Palm Desert Library. Korzilius will explain what a wilderness is and how the Santa Rosa Wilderness Area became part of the National Monument. The lecture begins at 6:30 p.m. For more information call National Science Collaborative at (760) 341-9312, or visit the library at 73-100 Fred Waring Rd.

On October 6 representatives of the National Monument will take part in the 'Fall Educators' Festival from 4-6 p.m. at the Living Desert Museum/Zoo in Palm Desert. With the help of the Natural Science Collaborative of the Desert, local educators will learn of the many new opportunities available to help their students experience the natural sciences of the National Monument and the area. Please call (760) 341-9312 for more details and to RSVP.

Bald Eagles take center stage as National Monument representatives and volunteers join U.S. Forest Service Biologist Deborah Guzman to search the Lake Hemet area for a local nesting pair. The watch begins at 8:30 a.m. October 19 at the Lake Hemet market on Highway 74 in Garner Valley.

October 23 marks the fourth anniversary of the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains National Monument. The celebration will include a variety of nature and art activities for the whole family at the National Monument Visitor Center between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. For more details contact the Visitor Center at (760) 862-9984 or come by 51-500 Highway 74, Palm Desert.

The Mizell Center is located at the corner of Ramon Road and Sunrise Way in Palm Springs. For more information call (760) 251-4800.

Everyone is concerned with earthquakes, and National Monument volunteer Joe Migliore will give his 'Countdown to Earthquakes' presentation on November 8 at 2 p.m. in the Palm Desert Library, 73-100 Fred Waring Rd. A desert naturalist, Migliore will explore the National Monument backyard features left through the ages.
