SUNSET INTERPRETIVE
WALK ON THE SOUTH SPIT
A sunset "time-trek" will
offer participants the chance to discover connections between past and present
landscapes at the South Spit, Humboldt Bay, on Friday, Oct. 1.
Staff from the Bureau of Land Management's Arcata Field Office will lead the
free, one-mile outing beginning at 5:30 p.m. at the South Spit Cooperative Management
Area (South Spit). Walkers will follow a loop route through the beach and dunes
with stops at the snowy plover habitat restoration area, and other points of
interest. The walk will conclude at the jetty (next to the parking lot) at sunset
(6:50pm). Participants should bring a jacket and warm clothing in case of wind.
The South Spit Cooperative Management Area is a 20-minute scenic drive from
either Eureka or Fortuna. Take U.S. 101 to the Hookton Road exit. Follow Hookton
Road west for 5 miles to the entrance. Continue on South Jetty road for approximately
4 miles to its end at the parking lot.
The South Spit is jointly managed by the Bureau of Land Management, California
Department of Fish and Game, and the Humboldt County. Many additional cooperators,
including Table Bluff Reservation - Wiyot Tribe, California Coastal Conservancy,
and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, have worked to provide improvements
and access to the area.
