Bridgeport Segment Continues to be Focus of South Yuba River Planners

The draft comprehensive management plan for the South Yuba River will continue to evolve at a public planning meeting on Tuesday evening, September 14, 2004, between 6:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., in the L.O.V.E. Building, 660 Minnie St., at Condon Park in Grass Valley.

Meeting participants will continue their focus on the 2.6-mile long Bridgeport segment of the river. The Bridgeport area, which contains the headquarters of the South Yuba River State Park, offers excellent recreational opportunities along with historical structures, and receives more visitors than any other point along the river.

In previous meetings, participants have discussed and adopted recommendations for management actions on 14 different issues. Three general issues remain: trails, water play, and fees. Discussions will also continue on the topic of visitor capacity - essentially, how many people can the unit accommodate before it is considered too crowded, and the environment shows signs of overuse?

The meeting will be the 29th in a series of planning meetings sponsored by the Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Forest Service, the California Department of Parks and Recreation, and the Nevada County Planning Department. The agencies are using the collaborative, or community-based, planning process to create the draft management plan. This process directly involves interested private citizens in determining the contents of the draft plan by working in cooperation with each other and the land management agencies.

The South Yuba River is a popular outdoor recreation destination for many Nevada County residents as well as people from outside the region who enjoy the opportunities for swimming, hiking, sunbathing, and nature appreciation in the highly scenic river canyon.
