BIZZ JOHNSON TRAIL SHUTTLE SERVICE ON SATURDAY, SEPT. 4

Weekend bus shuttle service on the Bizz Johnson National Recreation Trail between Susanville and Westwood is winding down, with three more offerings for the late summer and fall seasons. The next shuttle opportunity is Saturday, Sept. 4. Mountain bikers, hikers and joggers should meet at 8 a.m. for an 8:30 departure from the Susanville Railroad Depot, 601 Richmond Rd.

Shuttles also are scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 3, during Susanville's Rails to Trails Festival, and Saturday, Oct. 23, for the annual Fall Colors Bike Ride. Susanville Railroad Depot departures are set for 8:30 and 11 a.m. both days. Participants should arrive at the Depot a half-hour early.

The service transports trail users and their bikes from Susanville to Bizz Johnson Trail trail drop-off points including Devil's Corral, Fredonyer Summit, Mason Station and Westwood. From those points, trail users can take return trips to Susanville that are 7, 18, 25 or 30 miles in length.

Riders can reserve space by calling the Bureau of Land Management in Susanville at (530) 257-0456, or the Susanville Railroad Depot at 257-3252. Riders without reservations will be welcome on a space-available basis.

Lassen Rural Bus and the BLM team up to offer the service, which has a small fee.

The Bizz Johnson Trail follows the path of the old Fernley and Lassen Railroad. Winding through the Susan River Canyon, it crosses the river 11 times on massive steel and wood railroad bridges, and passes through two historic railroad tunnels. The surface is smooth dirt and gravel. Grades are gentle, making the trail ideal for families.
