EXPLORE THE SAN ANDREAS FAULT
LEARN ABOUT WHERE THE “BIG ONE” COULD STRIKE

The U.S. Bureau of Land Management and the Buena Vista Museum of Natural History are co-sponsoring a three-day field trip along the San Andreas Fault over Labor Day weekend (Sept. 4-6, 2004).

Participants can attend part-day, all day, or all three days. The Museum requires a registration fee. Continuing education college credit is available through California State University, Bakersfield.

On Saturday, Sept. 4, the program starts at the Chevron station at the summit of Cajon Pass on Highway I-15. Paleoseismic sites at Cajon Pass, Pallet Creek, Devil’s Punchbowl, Palmdale, Lake Elizabeth, Lake Hughes, Quail Lake, and Gorman are visited. Group camping at Ft. Tejon State Park is available, and there will be a campfire lecture there at 7 p.m.

On Sunday, Sept. 5, the tour continues through Fraizer Park, Lockwood Valley, Cuddy Valley, Mil Potrero, Apache Saddle, San Emigdio Canyon into Carrizo Plain National Monument. The day ends at the Selby Campground where another campfire lecture will be presented at 7 p.m.

On Monday , Sept. 6 (Labor Day), the seismic activity between the famous offset stream at Wallace Creek and Parkfield (“the earthquake capital of the world”) is explored.
