NEWS RELEASE For Immediate Release: June 8, 2004 BLM Seeks Comments on Gun Range Lease RenewalThe Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has prepared an environmental assessment (EA) on a proposed 20-year lease renewal for the Inland Fish and Game Association's sport shooting facility in Highland, California. "The Inland Fish and Game Conservation Association has leased these public lands in the Highland area since 1964," said John Kalish, BLM Lands Supervisor. "The lease, covering about 40 acres on Orange Street, is for a public sport shooting range for trap, skeet and general target shooting." Numerous improvements have been added to this facility over the years, including shade shelters and a clubhouse. The lease will expire August of this year. "The EA considers potential impacts of extending their lease, including impacts on wildlife habitat in the Santa Ana Wash and adjacent land owners," added Kalish. The EA is available online at the BLM web site: www.ca.blm.gov/palmsprings/. In addition, copies may be obtained by calling Diane Gomez, BLM Realty Specialist, at (760) 251-4852. All public comments received will be incorporated into the EA that will be used in making a final decision on the lease renewal application. Comments on the environmental assessment must be postmarked by July 12, 2004. For more information contact Gomez at (760) 251-4852. -BLM-
