South Yuba River Planning Meeting

The crafting of an overall vision to guide the development of a comprehensive management plan for the public lands along the 39-mile stretch of the South Yuba River from Spaulding Reservoir to Lake Englebright will be the focus of a public meeting on Wednesday, November 19, 2003, from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm in the L.O.V.E. Building, 660 Minnie Street, Condon Park in Grass Valley. Everyone who is interested in, or cares for the South Yuba River is invited to attend.

The Vision Statement will provide an overall direction for determining management recommendations that will be made later in the planning process. According to Ray Patton of the California Department of Parks and Recreation, "The purpose of the Vision Statement is to define what the community wants the river to be like twenty years from now. A shared agreement on the future of the South Yuba will make a lot of things possible."

It is expected that several meetings will be needed for the participants to develop, refine and finalize this critical item.

The upcoming meeting, ninth in a series, will be hosted by the U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, California Department of Parks and Recreation, and the Nevada County Planning Department. The four agencies are using the collaborative, or community-based planning process to create the plan. This process directly involves the public in determining the contents of the draft plan by working in cooperation with the land management agencies.

The South Yuba River is a popular outdoor recreation destination for many Nevada County residents as well as people from outside the region who enjoy the opportunities for swimming, hiking, sunbathing and nature appreciation in the highly scenic river canyon.
