BLM OFFERS FREE NOISE CHECKS FOR MOTORYCLES AND ATVs

The fall off-highway vehicle (OHV) riding season will soon be underway in northern California, and to help riders prepare, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is offering free noise and registration compliance checks for motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles.

The service will be offered Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 18 and 19, from 8 a.m. to noon at the Westside Staging Area of the South Cow Mountain OHV Recreation Area, eight miles east of Ukiah.

"In January California?s off-highway vehicle noise level regulations changed.  The OHV noise emission standard is now 96 dBA on 1986 and newer models.  Models 1985 and older must comply with 101 dBA," said BLM OHV Coordinator Brad Colin.  "The purpose of the inspections is to inform vehicle owners about these new limits and help them comply."

The courtesy compliance checks will include inspection of mufflers, spark arresters, registrations, and noise levels.   Those who can?t make it to the Cow Mountain compliance check can have their machines checked free of charge year-round by making an appointment at the BLM Ukiah Field Office, (707) 468-4000.
