FOREST RESERVE Guided hikes into the Headwaters
Forest Reserve and the historic Falk townsite will
continue into the autumn months, the Bureau of Land Management has announced. BLM park rangers will lead the
outings into the southern portion of the reserve on Saturdays and Sundays
through Nov. 15 or until heavy rains begin.
Those interested should make a reservation for a specific day by calling
the BLM's Arcata Field Office at (707) 825-2300. Interpretive hikes into Falk, site
of a historic mill town, will be offered on Saturdays, Oct. 18 and 25. Participants should meet at 10 a.m. at the north
Headwaters parking area at the end of Elk River Road. Reservations are not required. To get there, exit U. S. 101 south
of Eureka on Elk River Road and travel about six miles to the parking
area. Stay to the right at the two forks
in the road. During the hike, BLM park
rangers will explain the history of the mill town and the lifestyles of the
people who lived and worked there. For more information on these
