BIZZ JOHNSON SHUTTLE SET FOR SEPT. 6

The weekend Bizz Johnson Trail bus shuttle, offered by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and Lassen Rural Bus, is set for Saturday, Sept. 6. The shuttle leaves the Susanville Railroad Depot, 601 Richmond Rd., at 8:30 a.m.

The shuttle transports mountain bikers, hikers and joggers from Susanville to Westwood, allowing them return trips of seven, 18 or 25 miles on the Bizz Johnson National Recreation Trail without having to arrange their own vehicle shuttles, said Stan Bales, an outdoor recreation planner with the BLM. Passengers can also get off the bus at Devil's Corral and Fredonyer Summit to begin their trips back to Susanville.

"People getting off the bus at Devil's Corral have a seven-mile trip back to Susanville. Bike riders getting off at Fredonyer Summit can use forest maps to ride six miles of forest roads to Goumaz, where they can get on the trail and return to Susanville," Bales said. "That route totals 18 miles. The ride from the Westwood area is about 25 miles."

Shuttle riders should meet at 8 a.m. at the Susanville Railroad Depot to allow time for loading bicycles. There is a small shuttle fee. Reservations are recommended, and can be made by calling the Susanville Railroad Depot Visitor Center at (530) 257-3252.

Later this fall, a weekend shuttle will be offered Sunday, Oct. 5, at 8:30. The ride was originally part of the Rails to Trails Festival, but will be offered despite cancellation of this year's festival. Shuttle service will also be available for the annual "Fall Colors Ride," scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 18 at 8:30 and 11 a.m.
