BLM DONATING FIREWOOD TO LESS FORTUNATE FAMILIES

Modoc County families and charitable organizations will be receiving free firewood this holiday season, as part of a cooperative project involving the Bureau of Land Management and the Training, Employment and Community Help (TEACH) organization.

"We will be providing 30 cords of juniper firewood to less fortunate families, seniors and others who really need help keeping their homes warm this winter," said Tim Burke, manager of the BLM's Alturas Field Office.  "We will also provide 10 cords to community organizations for use in their fund raising efforts."

The juniper wood was cut by crews from the BLM's West Valley Fire Station in road maintenance and safety improvement projects along the Tule Mountain access road.  Inmates from the Devil's Garden Conservation Camp near Alturas split the wood for the donation program.

Burke said the TEACH organization identified the families who needed the firewood.  BLM fire crews and staff from the Modoc County Probation Department will deliver the wood in time for Christmas.

"We are happy to be returning to this holiday wood donation program that has been a tradition for many years," Burke said.   "It's a great use of this wood product that resulted from public land improvement work."
