BLM Receives Request to Change Use of La Posta Withdrawal and Transfer Land to Navy

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has received a request from the Department of the Navy to modify the use of the La Posta withdrawal from a microwave relay station to a training site and that BLM transfer administrative jurisdiction of the land to the Navy so it can be more easily managed.  The withdrawal encompasses approximately 1,079 acres of public land near Campo, California in southeast San Diego County.

Public Land Order 3457 withdrew these public lands in 1964 on behalf of the Navy for use as a microwave space relay station.  BLM will analyze the proposed modification in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act.

The BLM published a notice of the Proposed Modification of Withdrawal in the Federal Register on November 25, 2002, which initiated a 90-day public review and comment period of the proposal and a solicitation of requests for a public meeting.  Written requests will be accepted through February 24, 2003.  The notice also segregates the land from public land laws, including mining laws for a period not to exceed two years.  However, the lands are already segregated due to the current withdrawal.

Written requests should be sent to Howard K. Stark, Chief, Branch of Lands Management (CA-930), Bureau of Land Management, 2800 Cottage Way, Suite W-1834, Sacramento, California 95825-1886.  For more information regarding the proposed modifications of the La Posta Microwave Relay Station withdrawal contact BLM Realty Specialist Duane Marti at (916) 978-4675.
