FIRE RESTRICTIONS
King Range Burning Projects Set
to Begin
The Bureau of
Land Management has announced that fire restrictions have been lifted for
public lands managed by the Arcata Field Office in Humboldt, Trinity and
Mendocino counties. Easing fire
restrictions means that backcountry visitors can again build campfires outside
developed campgrounds. Campfire permits
are required, and are available at the BLM office in Arcata, or the King Range
National Conservation Area office in Whitethorn. "We are
reminding everyone that they need to be careful with all fires," said BLM
Fire Management Officer Tim Jones.
"Campfires should be kept small and never left unattended. Campers should be sure the fire is cold to
the touch when they break camp." Jones said there
were no wildfires on public lands managed by the Arcata Field Office during the
2002 wildfire season, and credited visitors' caution with fire. With the end of
fire season and the reduction in fire dangers, Jones said several prescribed
burning projects are planned for the coming weeks. In the King
Range, crews will burn brush piles on Saddle Mountain and along Smith Etter
Road. The brush was cut during
construction of shaded fuel breaks.
Crews also plan a pile-burning project on Hupa Mountain to reduce
hazardous fuels and improve forest health, and on the Samoa Peninsula to remove
stacks of exotic beach grass and other invasive weeds cut in recent improvement
projects. The California
Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, Honeydew Volunteer Fire Company and
the Hoopa Valley Tribe will assist with the projects. For more
information, contact the Arcata Field Office (707) 825-2300, or the King Range
Project Office, (707) 986-5400.
