News Release For Immediate Release: Nov. 19, 2002 Contact: James
Dawson or Rich Burns (707) 468-4000 CA-N-03-14 BLM PLANS PRESCRIBED FIRE ON
SOUTH COW MOUNTAIN
The U. S. Bureau
of Land Management plans to ignite a prescribed fire on South Cow Mountain,
west of Lakeport, this week. The South
Cow Mountain Off Highway Vehicle Recreation Area will be closed during the
project, planned to get underway Tuesday, Nov. 19. Jim Dawson, fire
management officer for BLM's Ukiah Field Office, said the 3,000-acre project is
designed to reduce fuels that could contribute to a wildfire, and to improve
wildlife habitat. He said fire crews
will burn brush in a "mosaic" pattern that will reduce the buildup of
fuels and encourage growth of plants favored by wildlife. BLM will be
working with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection to
complete the project over about three days.
The fire will be ignited only when weather conditions including winds,
temperature, relative humidity and others will allow for safe and successful
burning. -BLM- Ukiah Field Office - 2550 North State Street - Ukiah,
