BLM LIFTS FIRE RESTRICTIONS

With the onset of rains and cool fall weather, the Bureau of Land Management Redding Field Office has lifted restrictions on outdoor uses of fire.

The restrictions were in effect on public lands in Shasta, Butte, Siskiyou, Tehama and Trinity counties.

Backcountry visitors can again use campfires, with campfire permits, outside of developed campgrounds and recreation sites.  BLM Fire Management Officer Walter Herzog cautioned that wildland visitors must still use caution with campfires.    Fires should be kept small and must be completely extinguished when breaking camp.

During this year's fire season 612 acres of public lands managed by the Redding Field Office were burned in 10 wildfires.  Herzog said only a few fires were caused by illegal campfires.  He said public observance of fire restrictions helped keep the number of human-caused fires to a minimum during a long and hot fire season.

Additional information on campfires is available from the Redding Field Office, (530) 224-2100.
