NEW ACCESS ROUTE COMPLETED INTO CHAPPIE-SHASTA OHV AREA BLM, BOR, Forest Service Announce Restored Access to
Area A new access route has
been completed into the Chappie-Shasta off-highway vehicle recreation area near
Redding, providing off-road driving enthusiasts an alternate route into the
area. The Bureau of Land
Management (BLM) and the Bureau of Reclamation (BOR) developed the access road
after the primary access road across Shasta Dam was closed because of security
needs following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. The new trail, just
north of Redding off Iron Mountain Road and Matheson Road, provides access by
four-wheel-drive vehicles, motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles, according to
Andy Isola, an outdoor recreation planner with the Bureau of Land Management?s
(BLM) Redding Field Office. Isola said
the new trail was a cooperative project involving the BLM and the BOR. Information on the new
trail is available from the BLM at (530) 224-2100. Additionally, limited
access across Shasta Dam has been restored by the BOR. Visitors who want to cross Shasta Dam to
enter the Chappie-Shasta OHV area can obtain permits from the BOR. Permits are available by telephoning (530)
275-1554 three days in advance. Motor
homes are still restricted from crossing the dam. The Shasta-Trinity
National Forest has reopened Shasta campground, near the base of Shasta Dam,
for visitors who reach the area via the dam or the new access road. Campground information is available from the
Shasta-Trinity National Forest at (530) 275-1587. -BLM- Redding Field Office 355 Hemsted Drive Redding, California 96002 |
